Manchester united have claimed the second part of their run at a historic quintuple of trophies as they beat Tottenham in a penalty shoot-out to claim the Carling Cup on Sunday.

United had already won the World Club Cup but were made to work for their prize as an even match offered few chances.  However, it was United, just slightly the better team on the day, who held their nerve to win 4-1 in the shoot-out.

After playing  a cagey 120 minutes of football that left both sets of layers exhausted, the referee blew for the end of extra time which meant only one thing - penalties.

Ryan Giggs was first up for United but he overcame the pressure to drill the ball home off the inside of the post.  The responsibility then fell to Jamie O’Hara to level the scores, but United keeper Ben Foster clawed away the powerful spot kick.  Carlos tevez then made it 2-0 before David Bently’s miss signalled the end for Harry redknapp’s men.  Although Vedran corluka was able to score for Spurs, the shoot-out was ended after Cristiano Ronaldo and then Anderson emphatically slotted home.

Spurs, the defending champions looked dispondant as Anderson’s winning kick found it’s mark, but they can hold their heads high for matching the european champions in almost every department for over 2 hours of football.  Radknapp’s men infact, enjoyed the better of the chances and if not for some wastefull finishing from Aaron Lennon could have won the match in regulation.

It was not to be however and with one swipe of Anderson’s left boot, united had claimed phase two in their quest to five trophies this season.

Can they achieve this monumantal task? Leave your comments below.
