Ronaldo nets twice as united rout baggies

Manchester United looked like champions once again as they tore apart a forlorn West Bromwich side at the Hawthornes.

United took the lead through Dimitar Berbatov’s angled drive in the 22nd minute before goals from Carlos Tevez and Nemanja Vidic made it 3-0.  Cristiano Ronaldo then put a shine on the score by netting twice, the second from an audacious no-look pull back by Ryan Giggs.

Giggs, who turned 35 in November put in his second man of the match performance in four days as he partnered Michael Carrick in the heart of the United midfield.

Before kick-off United were handed a boost by the inclusion of Rio ferdinand and Ji-Sung Park in the starting lineup.  Ferdinand and Park were expected to miss at least another week but were declared fit to play before the match.

United were in scintilating form and looked like true world champions as they completely out classed West Brom.  The win gave United a three point cushion atop the Premier league while Edwin Van Der Sar kept his premiership record eleventh clean sheet.  The United stopper has not conceded a goal for 1,032 minutes since Samir Nasri scored the winner for Arsenal in the 2-1 defeat in November.

Pepe latest to stir ronaldo transfer pot

Is Pepe beckoning Ronaldo to join him at Real?

Is Pepe beckoning Ronaldo to join him at Real?

It is no secret that Real Madrid want Cristiano Ronaldo.  No matter how many times Ramon Calderon or Bernd Schuster deny any interest, it is clear that they will make anonther run at Ron in the near future.

Sir Alex Ferguson has made his feelings about Real clear over recent months, describing them as “that mob” and saying he “wouldn’t sell them a virus”.  This outburst has led to Real toning down their persuit of the current world player of the year, but that hasn’t stopped some high profile players giving their two-cents.

Real defender Pepe has been quoted as saying “Cristiano said he has a desire to come to Madrid, but things did not turn out well.  It’s caused me great trouble.  For me it is always better to have Cristiano on your team.  He wanted to come this year.  He likes Real Madrid, wants to live in this city and it is a club he has always dreamed of playing at.”

Ronaldo grabs winner, sends united to final

Manchester United reached the final of the Carling Cup after beating a determined Derby County side 4-2 (4-3 agg) at old trafford on Tuesday.

Derby led 1-0 after the first leg of the semi-final tie but were still considered extreme underdogs going into Tuesday’s match.

Nani struck first for United with an outstanding 35 yard strike that Roy Carroll was unlucky not to keep out.  Minutes later United took the lead in the tie for the first time as John O’shea evaded the Derby offside trap to slot home his first goal since 2007 and a Carlos Tevez header made it 3-0 (3-1agg).

Derby improved after the break and got back into the game as Giles Barnes scored from the penalty spot after Paul Green was fouled by Johnny Evans.  Derby’s joy was shortlived though as Tevez was fouled by Carroll and Cristiano Ronaldo slotted home the ensuing spot kick.

At 4-1 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate, Darby could have been forgiven for thinking the match was over but to their great credit battled to the end and got their just reward as Barnes stroked in a superb 25 yard free-kick.

In truth United were never really under pressure and seemed as though they were happy to sit back and conserve energy.  The win puts United in the final to face the winner of Wednesday’s match between Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley.

The win was soured slightly as United suffered three injury blows, with Nani, Anderson and Evans all facing lengthy spells on the sidelines.

Ronaldo Collects His Prize as United Claim 2nd Place

On the night that Cristiano Ronaldo accepted his trophy for being named the world’s best player, it was his friend, Wayne Ronney that grabbed the headlines.

Rooney scored the game’s only goal as his Manchester United team drew ominously close to league leaders Liverpool, now just 2 points behind their bitter rivals.  United fans, who celebrated with Ronaldo before kick-off, had only a minute to wait before they could cheer a goal scored by the other half of united’s most dynamic of duos.  Rooney converted a driven cross from Ronaldo after just 53 seconds of play, scoring the second fastest goal of the season.

The early goings were bitter-sweet for Rooney however, as he limped off with a hamstring strain after 5 minutes. Rooney’s injury will be a worry for Sir Alex Ferguson, as his young star will miss 3 weeks.

Wigan, to there credit looked better equipped to face United than Chelsea had just 4 days earlier, as they controlled 50% of the possession.  For all their involvement however, Wigan were able to muster just one clear chance but Ryan Taylor shot woefully wide from 12 yards.

In truth, 1-0 was a fair result, and for all Wigan’s plucky industry, United were fully deserving of their harder than expected 3 points.

This win gives United the chance to be top of the premiership for the first time all season, if, that is, they can win at Bolton on Saturday.

Ronaldo Named Fifa World Player of the Year

Cristiano Ronaldo yesterday, beat out a host of world-class players including Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Milan’s Kaka to claim the Fifa World Player of The Year title.

The Manchester United and Portugal winger was an overwhealming favorite to capture the title for the first time, after winning the FIFpro, players and sports writers player of the year awards last year. Ronaldo becomes only the second Portugese winner of the prestigious award after Luis Figo claimed it in 2001.

Ronaldo’s 42 goal haul in 2007/08 led his team to the Champions League and Premiership titles making him the obvious choice for the award. However, a poor showing for Portugal at the European Championships and a penalty miss in the Champions League Final left many people questioning his ability to shine on the biggest stage, and his worthiness of the title ‘worlds best’.

Ronaldo, who was injured early this season has come back and is starting to get into his stride, scoring 8 times thus far in the Barclays Premiership.

Manchester United currently sit in 3rd, 5 points behind leaders Liverpool but hold two games in hand.  United could be top by the time Liverpool host Everton on Sunday if they are able to beat Bolton and Wigan on wednesday and Saturday respectively.

Ronaldo Hit With Verbal Abuse as United March On

Manchester United sent a message to title rivals Liverpool as they steamrolled Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.  United dominated throughout, controlling over 60% of the possession while leading in goal attempts 6 - 0.

United were in a rampant mood and came at Chelsea from the outset. Blues boss Phil Scolari opted to play just one foreward, Didier Drogba, while leaving Premiership top scorer Nicolas Anelka on the bench.

Nemanja Vidic opened the scoring on the stroke of half time when he headed in Ryan Giggs’ corner at the back post.  Wayne Rooney doubled United’s lead after an hour as he slammed home from Patrice Evra’s cross and the win was wrapped up late on by Dimitar Berbatov.

The one sour point for the red’s was having to listen to the disgusting abuse aimed at Cristiano Ronaldo from the Chelsea fans.  Ronaldo, who earlier in the week was involved in a bad car accident was subject to chants of “you should have died in the tunnel” from the outset.  Such acts of poor taste should have no place in football but sadly occur all too often.

The abuse didn’t seem to affect the Portugese star however, as he was involved in all three goals and put in an impressive display throughout.  Ronaldo however, was upstaged by Ryan Giggs, a man 12 years his senior as Giggs put in a masterful perfromance of technique and defensive guile.  Giggs was everywhere during his 80 minute outing in the centre of Sir Alex’s midfield proving that he still has what it takes to be the best player on the pitch, even at the age of 35.

This performance, in which United could have scored many more goals, should serve as a warning to current pace-setters Liverpool, whose manager Rafa Benitez angered United with his comments in mid-week.  The message from United, simple - watch out, we’re coming for you.

Ronaldo in Horror Ferrari Wreck

Cristiano Ronaldo has totalled his Ferrari 575 while driving through a tunnel near Manchester Airport.

The United star, 23, was driving home with fellow United player Edwin Van Der Sar following closely behind when the accident occurred.  According to the sole witness, Ronaldo’s car lost its front left wheel after it had carened into the tunnel wall.  Ronaldo was administered a breath test at the scene which came up negative and the real cause of the accident is under investigation

Manchester United confirmed that Ronaldo was not hurt in the incident but that he was understandably shaken. Ronaldo declined comment.

A spokesperson for Manchester United said: “He was involved in an incident this morning. No other cars were involved.  He’s fine and is training as normal with the team this morning.”

Ronaldo came on as a substitute but couldn’t stop his team from falling to Derby County in The League Cup on Wednesday night and is pencilled to play against Chelsea on Sunday.

What do you all think caused the accident?

a. Manchester’s famously clement weather

b. Ronaldo was doing his hair in the mirror at the time

c. Ronny and Edwin were racing

d. He thought he saw Ashley Cole walking on the side of the tunnel

e. He was on the phone with the tanning salon

Ronaldo In Real Tug of War

Could Ronaldo be on his way to Real Madrid?

Could Ronaldo walk away from Sir Alex in Favor of Ramon calderon?

Real Madrid director of football, Pedro Trapote has been quoted as saying that a summer deal bringing Cristiano Ronaldo to the Bernabeau had been finalized.  This brought a quick response of defiance from United Boss Sir Alex Ferguson who said he “wouldn’t sell a virus” to “that mob.”

After a summer of uncertainty in which Ronaldo was continually linked with a move away from the Premiership and Champions league winners, this latest claim from Spain appears to have been the last straw for the United boss.  When asked about the claims during a training session in Japan, where United are competing in the World Club Cup, Sir Alex remained typically defiant.  Ferguson said “Would I get into a contract with that mob? Absolutely no chance”  ”I wouldn’t sell them a virus - that’s a no. There’s no agreement whatsoever between the clubs.”  Ferguson reafirmed his desire to keep Ronaldo, despite the constant barrage of attention radiating from across the English Channel.  It would seem that Real’s actions may be intended to unsettle the player but all they have succeeded in doing is make an enemy out of one of the most influential and stubborn men in European Football.

So for now at least the saga continues, with the white of Real pulling south and the red of United standing firm in the North, only time will tell which one of these sporting superpowers will win out.

Ronaldo, Others Rested as United Progress

Cristiano Ronaldo sat out along side a host of United stars and watched as his team progressed through to the champions league knockout stages.  Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney scored for United either side of two Aalborg strikes that stunned the Old Trafford crowd.  United had already secured safe passage from the group but needed a positive result to beat out Villareal for the top spot.

Before kickoff, Ronaldo collected the trophy he won last week for being voted Europe’s best player, drawing raptuous applause from the home fans.  This would be the only time Ronaldo would set foot on the pitch as he was rested by Sir Alex Ferguson for a less than vital encounter.

United started fast, taking the lead in the 3rd minute after Rooney had played in Tevez to open the scoring.  Aalborg though, weren’t phased and were ahead before half-time through headded goals from Michael Jakobsen and Jeppe Curth.

The lead lasted only 7 minutes though, as Rooney pounced on an Anderson through ball to finish powerfully with his right foot.  This signalled waves of United pressure but Aalbord were able to hold on for a famous draw.

Man Utd: Kuszczak, Neville, Ferdinand, Evans, O’Shea, Nani, Gibson, Anderson, Giggs, Rooney, Tevez.

Subs: Foster, Vidic, Fletcher, Possebon, Rafael, Park, Scholes

Goals: Tevez (3), Rooney (52)

AaB: Zaza, Bogelund, Olfers, Jakobsen, Pedersen, Curth , Enevoldsen, Augustinussen, Risgaard, Due, Saganowski.

Subs: Kenneth Nielsen, Nomvethe, Braemer, Ronnie Schwartz Nielsen, Kristensen, Caca, Sorensen

Goals: Jakobsen (32), Curth (45)

Cristiano Ronaldo Injured as United Leave it Late

Nemanja Vidic scored in injury time to salvage a scrappy victory as United stuggled against a determined Sunderand side.  Sunderland came in to Old Trafford managerless after Roy Keane’s departure mid-week and were subject to heavy pressure throughout the match.  United however, never really got a clean look at Marton Fulop’s goal, and had to wait until the 92nd minute before Vidic saved their blushes.

United, frustrated by the visitors defensive tactics, took a blow when Cristiano Ronaldo was forced off early in the second half with what looked to be a hip injury.  Ronaldo had struggled to get a grip on the game as Sunderland employed a double-team strategy against him.  Ronaldo walked off under his own power but appeared to be in some discomfort as he requested his own exit.

United’s winner came from an unlikey source as makeshift center-forward Nemanja Vidic found himself in the right place as Michael Carrick’s long drive cannoned back off the post.  The Old trafford crowd that had been restless for much of the game erupted in relief as United kept themselves within touching distance of Liverpool at the summit of the premiership.
