Ronaldo Named Fifa World Player of the Year
Cristiano Ronaldo yesterday, beat out a host of world-class players including Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Milan’s Kaka to claim the Fifa World Player of The Year title.
The Manchester United and Portugal winger was an overwhealming favorite to capture the title for the first time, after winning the FIFpro, players and sports writers player of the year awards last year. Ronaldo becomes only the second Portugese winner of the prestigious award after Luis Figo claimed
it in 2001.
Ronaldo’s 42 goal haul in 2007/08 led his team to the Champions League and Premiership titles making him the obvious choice for the award. However, a poor showing for Portugal at the European Championships and a penalty miss in the Champions League Final left many people questioning his ability to shine on the biggest stage, and his worthiness of the title ‘worlds best’.
Ronaldo, who was injured early this season has come back and is starting to get into his stride, scoring 8 times thus far in the Barclays Premiership.
Manchester United currently sit in 3rd, 5 points behind leaders Liverpool but hold two games in hand. United could be top by the time Liverpool host Everton on Sunday if they are able to beat Bolton and Wigan on wednesday and Saturday respectively.
